I’m home!

December 29, 2006 at 2:40 pm (General Life, The Big Move)

Well, new home. I still feel kind weird saying that, and realizing that this really is my new home. I got here in one piece, with details to be given later. The good news is, I got a free bump to 1st class on the Philly to Mancheser leg.

I spent the day running around Stockport, sorting out odds and ends. I registered with the local doctor, changed my few dollars into pounds, bought some things at the shops, got a new cell phone and number, and put in a few hours in my new job.

I’m starting work officially on Tuesday. Bit nervous, for sure.

In the Waiting Room

December 23, 2006 at 9:35 am (General Life, The Big Move)

I feel like I’m in some weird life-waitingroom.

Work ended yesterday.

I move Wednesday.

Today’s going to be spent packing. I shipped off five boxes of stuff yesterday (costing me about $270 to ship…ouch!). My bro Saul bought me some of those vacuum packing bags to get more stuff packed in my suitcases. We’ll see  how those work. I’m watching MSNBC and seeing all the troubles at the airport – seems like it has that every year.

Not quite as planned….

November 29, 2006 at 5:56 pm (Teaching, The Big Move)

Well, the kids found out today that I’m leaving. But, unfortunately, not from me.

The person they hired to replace me already works in the school. She knew of my plan on when and how I was going to tell my kiddos. When she got the word that she had been hired (yesterday), she told her daughter, who goes to the school. Daughter told a friend, who told another friend, who told one of my students.

Who came up to me this morning, with tears in his eyes, saying, “Ms. C! You’re moving? You’re leaving us?”

Sigh. Yeah. I feel like a TOTAL ASSHOLE.

So to nip it in the bud, I sat down with my four classes today, and let them know what was going on. And they cried. A lot. And were mad. Very mad. And were scared. All of the things I expected them to me, but at a later date and in a more controlled atmosphere.  So many questions, so many tears, so much frustration. They didn’t deserve to find out this way.
I think this is the 2nd hardest day I’ve ever had to work. Second only to the day I had to let my kids know that another staff member had died the night before.

Less than 30 days left!

November 28, 2006 at 7:21 pm (The Big Move)

And the countdown begins. I have less than 30 days left in the US. Things are coming together quickly!

I got back my passport, and now I’m just waiting for a copy of the renter’s agreement for the house. When I get that, and $520 in my bank account, my visa application will be sent!

Work had their last interview for my replacement today. They should have a final decision tomorrow. I’ll be letting my students know in a few days that I’ll be leaving.  I have an “exit interview” scheduled for Friday, and a few more IEP meetings I want to get done before I leave.

The Crochet Club kids have only 3 classes left with me!

I went to Pier 1 on Black Friday, and with my $100 gift card, I got 4 dinner plates, 4 bread plates, 4 mugs, 4 bowls, 1 platter, 4 martini glasses, 4 margarita glasses, 4 wine glasses and 4 coasters. It’s costing more to ship them over than it did for the actual objects!

I still don’t have a flight. Looking today, I’ll prolly be spending $500 on a one-way.

The good news is, I got my newly renewed passport back in the mail yesteday.

The bad news is my sex was listed as “M”.

So, back to the agency it went. Now I’m looking at two more weeks until I can apply for my visa.

Our new home?

October 30, 2006 at 12:38 pm (The Big Move)

I hope to God I’m not jinxing anything by talking about it on my blog, but Emma may have found our new home. She stopped by the agent’s office today, and got the low down on a two-bedroom bungalow located in the town she is presently living in. It’s a cute little place at the end of a cul-de-sac, with a nice looking yard. It’s a 5 minute walk to the town center, and right near a bus stop. Which is ideal for us, since neither of us will have a car right away when I move over at the end of December.

I’ve only seen the pictures of it on the internet, but Emma’s been by it, and she says it’s pretty sweet.

I’ve seen other pictures of the interior, and it looks reasonably new. It’s this yucky rosey-pink color in some places, though. I guess I can deal with that. Em’s got an appointment to go there with the agent tomorrow, and narrow down all the bills and costs and stuff. No pets, so that’s a bit of a bummer.

Em’s got a load saved up just for this, so we’re not too freaked about the start-up cost right now. We’re just working the bills out so that we can be sure we can swing it with our two incomes. When Em told her Nana about the place, she said that she knows the neighbor, and that he used to work with Emma’s granddad. Em thinks it’s a coincidence, I think it’s a sign.
