Still married!

BOSTON — Massachusetts lawmakers have recessed a constitutional convention without voting on a proposed ballot question to ban same-sex marriages. The move effectively blocks the measure from the November 2008 ballot. The convention recessed until Jan. 2, the last day the current Legislature is in session. That makes it unlikely a vote would take place in time for the question to land on the ballot in late 2008.

Earlier in the session on Thursday, lawmakers unanimously rejected an amendment that would have banned the state from recognizing all gay marriages, including the more than 8,000 that have already taken place since May 2004. A second amendment which wasn’t debated would define marriage as the union of a man and woman, but leave in place those same-sex marriages that have already taken place.
